What to Expect

Classes typically begin with a number of sun salutations to warm up the body, followed by a flowing series of postures (which may include); standing balances, twists, backbends, abdominal core work, hip openers, arm balances and inversions.

The flow series is particularly good at improving upper body strength and stamina and improving muscle tone and flexibility.

Modifications and options are provided throughout the class for all levels and abilities.

Tips to make your first (or any) yoga class more enjoyable:

Below is a list of some of the things that are common in yoga class, so just accept that at least one or more will happen to you and go for it!

  • There will be postures that you find challenging, for whatever reasons (tight hips, dodgy knees, sore back) and its perfectly fine to sit back in child’s pose and relax for a few moments.
  • Having your eyes closed during poses and sequences.
  • Confusing your left from your right.
  • Noisy bodily functions (sneezing, coughing, sniffing, breaking wind) all very normal. Just smile and move on ☺
  • Losing your balance/ losing your footing and falling over.
  • Falling asleep during savasana/ yoga nidra.

Tips for things you should avoid doing in class:

  • Bringing your phone to your mat – yoga is a time for introspection. Leave it with your belongings or if you must have it by your side, keep it on silent. Checking for notifications, texting and answering calls are all big no-no’s ,unless it’s an emergency.
  • Chatting with your neighbour – coming with friends and making friends before and after the class is all part of the experience, but chatting during class is not good.
  • Arriving late and leaving early – not only does it disturb the ‘zen’ and cause disruption to fellow students, it’s also not advisable to arrive late and jump straight into a ‘flow’ when your body isn’t properly warmed. Equally leaving before Savasana (relaxation) prevents the mind and body from processing what happened during the class.
